Householders across the South East will start to receive the first of three €200 electricity credits from today.
The government will be providing 2.2m account holders a total of €600 in credits over the next six months in an effort to tackle the cost of living crisis.
The second and third payments will be paid in January/February and March/April.
Susanne Rodgers of Social Justice Ireland is concerned the credit will be used for paying off arrears:
"We're so conscious that a lot of households don't need the credit, and there's a lot of households where this won't go far enough."
"I am concerned that there are lots of households where this energy credit will get eaten up by arrears."
