Waterford and Wexford are under a status Orange weather warning for rain until midnight.
Meanwhile, Carlow, Kilkenny and Tipperary are included in a yellow alert until the same time.
Met Eireann's warning of heavy, thundery downpours which could lead to spot flooding in places.
Motorists are being advised to take extreme care on the roads today as a result.
Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather says the stormy conditions were already being felt last night:
"There was some intense thunder storm activity last night, with a lot of lightning strikes detected and also some heavy thundery downpours."
"The rainfall was pretty localised, but it certainly did fall very quickly and very heavy in the South."
