Green Party considering potential congestion charge for Waterford city

Traffic reduction measures which include a potential congestion charge could be on the way for Waterford motorists.

There are reports the Green Party is considering the move as part of its climate-change agenda.

Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway are also in the running for potential congestion charges and other traffic-reduction measures.

A report from 2018 found Dublin commuters spent 246 hours a year in their car, with average speeds in the city centre of just 9.6 kilometres an hour at peak times.

Eugene Drennan, President of the Irish Road Haulage Association, says we shouldn't follow in the footsteps of places like London:

"Unlike London, none of our cities has the [same] level, standard or quality of transport," he said.

"And secondly, one of the main reasons for the congestion... is the proliferation of traffic lights. If you look at the Quays [of Dublin] any day, in between certain sections of traffic lights there are no cars."
