Motorists in Wexford and Waterford are being asked to pay extra attention today.
It's as Gardaí in Wicklow are leading a new operation, which clamps down on what they call 'lifesaving' offenses.
The operation is in place until 7pm, and takes in roads across the East Coast.
#OperationImpact Project Safe is taking place today from 7am – 7pm as part of the Christmas road safety campaign.
Focusing on lifesaver offences, Gardaí will enforce the use of seat belts, drink and drug driving offences, speed limits and use of mobile phones when driving. pic.twitter.com/O3wvBGaKlg— An Garda Síochána (@GardaTraffic) December 3, 2021
Speaking to Beat News, Garda Mark Pender from Baltinglass explains what 'lifesaving' offenses are:
"The aim of Operation Impact Project Safe is to make road users safe in the lead up to Christmas and the focus is on this campaign is lifesaver offenses which are speeding, using mobile phones and driving while intoxicated."
"The overall objective is to reduce the number of collisions and save lives while people are using the roads."
