Fireworks to light up Wexford skies this evening

The skies over Wexford Town will be lit up tonight to mark the launch of the 65th Wexford Festival Opera.

The fireworks display will commence at 7pm. However, those attending the opening ceremony are advised to arrive early as traffic restrictions will be in place from 6pm to 9pm. Extra parking and stewards will also be on hand to assist. The opening evening is always a highlight for children and families in Wexford’s calendar of events.

The 65th Wexford Festival Opera runs for 12 days from this evening. A dramatic and diverse trio of rarely produced operas will take the mainstage, the festival will open with Herculanum by Félicien David (1810-1876), an epic tale of forbidden love between Pagan royalty and Christian slaves, set against the backdrop and ultimate eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

In addition to the three evening operas, this year’s programme also includes three daytime ShortWorks operas, concerts, lunchtime recitals, lectures, talks, parties, buffets and lunches: 56 events over the 12-day Festival. For details of events and tickets, check out www.wexfordopera.com
