Fianna Fáil bill aims to criminalise false insurance claims

A Fianna Fáil bill proposes to make false insurance claims a criminal offence.

False claims for compensation are one of the biggest drivers of insurance premiums and cost consumers hundreds of euro every year.

Often when false claims are identified, legal action does not ensue.

Fianna Fáil's Billy Kelleher says we cannot have a society whereby the cheat is the one who wins.

He said: "If you go into a shop and rob it, there is a sanction, if you take money from the till there is a prosecution, but if you go into the shop and slip on the toilet floor and make a fraudulent claim, there is no sanction.
"So it is almost a crime that is encouraged by the fact we do not prosecute fraudsters and cheats."
He has drafted a bill that would mean if a claim is determined as false, the case would have to be referred to the DPP.

It is due to be debated before the Dáil this evening
