The father of a baby who was found dead in their home in Dublin was unaware of the infants death until gardaí called to the house to inform him that the body of his partner had been found in the Strawberry Beds area of the city.
The man had been had been sleeping and was visited by gardaí in the early hours of Thursday morning according to The Irish Times.
Gardaí are treating the death of baby as "unexplained", awaiting results of a postmortem examination carried out of the seven-month-old yesterday.
The mother's death is being treated as a tragedy.
Gardaí have said they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the deaths.
The Irish Times reports that the family were originally from the west of the country, but have been living in Lucan for some time.
At approximately 3.45am on Thursday, gardaí were alerted to a woman acting suspiciously after getting out of her care on the M50 near the toll plaza.
Upon investigation, her body was discovered on the Lower Road, Strawberry Beds in Lucan, after which gardaí established the woman's address by checking the registration of her vehicle.
Officers informed the father of the incident shortly after, at which time it was discovered that the child was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.
A Garda statement said: “At this stage investigating gardaí are treating these incidents as a family tragedy and are not currently seeking anyone else in connection with the deaths.” The family have requested privacy "at this sad time".
