Established to help girls stand up for basic human rights, International Day of the Girl is marked on October 11th each year.
This year's theme, EmPOWER, aims to focus on girls caught up in war, where females are more likely to be subjected to sexual and physical violence, child marriage, exploitation and trafficking.

So how did it come about? International Day of the Girl was established by the United Nations six years ago with the aim of highlighting and addressing the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls' empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.
There's 1.1 million girls across the world, with each being a source of power, energy, and creativity – and the millions of girls in emergencies are no exception.

While efforts to empower girls should always be an ongoing concern, October 11 stands as a date to rally people behind the cause of empowering girls so that they can have better educations, better survival rates, better protection from child marriage and sexual assault, and better health services.
Do you believe in the power of a girl? We do. Happy international #DayoftheGirl! 🙌 pic.twitter.com/Ezhn30kvUo
