Dungarvan hospital closure discussed in Dáil

Dungarvan hospital closure discussed in Dáil

The closure of a ward in the region has been discussed in the Dáil.

Waterford TD David Cullinane addressed the Taoiseach about the closure of a rehab unit at St. Joseph's, Dungarvan.

Sinn Féin spokesperson for public expenditure is Deputy David Cullinane:

"We've heard from a number of deputies that the Sacred Heart ward in St. Joseph's Hospital in Dungarvan was closed."

"I spoke to the director of services in the HSE today and he says that the only reason why that ward was closed is because the hospital simply cannot recruit nurses."

"Hospitals can't recruit nurses because up to this day, the Minister for Public Expenditure has not committed to 'equal work for equal pay."

The HSE insists the unit closure is temporary and Taoiseach Enda Kenny had this response to the issue raised by Deputy Cullinane:

"The Health Minister has gone to exceptional lengths to improve the position for young trained nurses in Ireland."

"They are given full-time contracts and he has also made available incentives for nurses to return to work here in Ireland."
