Christmas will cost Irish households an average of €1,000 this year.
However new research from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission finds homes with children will spend more than €1,300
The study also finds a third of people plan to borrow to cover their Christmas spending.
CCPC spokesperson, Gráinne Griffin, says it would be wiser for people to use savings:
"Before you reach for the credit card before you decide that credit is the way to go this Christmas, just consider that if maybe you have savings that you can dip into, and of course you set them aside for a rainy day but something like Christmas with unexpected expenses can mount, that could be the time that we reach for our saving."
