Carlow medical student attempts to leave Ukraine through humanitarian corridor

An Irish medical student stranded in Ukraine says conditions are tough, with no electricity or water in the hostel where she's been staying.

A rescue attempt to help 19-year-old Rachael Diyaolu flee from Sumy yesterday failed after Scottish volunteers were allegedly fired on by Russian fighters.

Sumy was one of the first Ukrainian cities to be attacked by Russian forces.

Rachel who is a medical student says she was "heartbroken" when the rescue attempt failed.

However, she's now on the move and hoping to get across the Polish border today.

"So today we got notice of a humanitarian corridor being opened up", said a relieved Rachel.

She continued: "They've gotten us this morning and we're heading for Poland - we're just hoping that we don't come across too many obstacles on the way down."
