Pilot dies following plane crash in Waterford

It has been confirmed that a man has died following the crash near Dungarvan, Waterford.

The incident is believed to have happened at around 16:30 this afternoon, when a small plane came down in a field.

The elderly man was the only person involved. The plane crashed near the N25 in a town land called Knockahavaun.

A preliminary investigation of the scene will be held this evening, upon the arrival of the Air Accident Investigations Unit.
The main N25 Waterford to Dungarvan Road has been closed at Knocknagranagh and diversions are in place. The road is expected to remain closed for a number of hours.

Motorists travelling from Waterford are asked to divert at Lemybrien on to R675. From Dungarvan drivers should take the Knocknagranagh junction to Ballinroad Road onto R675.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone who notice a low flying aircraft in the Dungarvan area to contact them on 058 48600.

A light aircraft has crashed in County Waterford.

Emergency services are at the scene on the outskirts of Dungarvan.

It's believed the aircraft came down in a field near the N25 in the Knocknagranagh area just before 4.45pm.

The pilot suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was the only person in the plane and nobody else was hurt.

The main Waterford to Dungarvan road has been closed as a result with diversions in place from Bridgie Terries and Knocknagranagh Cross. The road is expected to remain closed for some time.

The Aviation Authorities have been notified and Gardai say investigations are ongoing.
