Certain batches of a popular premium ice cream brand sold nationwide have been recalled over chemical compound contamination fears.
2-Chloroethanol has been detected in twelve separate batches of Häagen-Dazs ice cream with best before dates between March 16th, 2023 and April 23rd, 2023 (listed below).
The affected flavours include Belgian Chocolate, Cookies & Cream, Pralines & Cream, Duo Belgian Chocolate, and Strawberry Crunch.
According to the FSAI, 2-Chloroethanol is a recognised reaction product of ethylene oxide. Ethylene oxide is a pesticide that is not permitted for use in foods sold in the EU but is approved for use by other countries outside the EU.

Although the consumption of contaminated batches does not pose an acute risk to health, there is an increased risk if there is continued consumption of contaminated food over a long period of time.
Therefore, the FSAI say that exposure to this potentially dangerous substance needs to be minimised.
The chemical is classified as an extremely hazardous substance in the United States and is subject to strict reporting requirements by facilities which produce, store, or use it in significant quantities.
Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the implicated batches.
