Author of Herity report says he doesn't believes lives are in danger with lack of 2nd cath lab at UHW

The Joint Committee on Health are meeting today in Dublin to look at the findings of the Herity report.

Waterford TD's Mary Butler, David Cullinane & John Halligan are among a number of politicians putting questions to Dr. Niall Herity - the Clinical Director of Cardiology at Belfast HSC Trust.

Senator Dr Keith Swanick, Fianna Fáil's Spokesperson on Health asked Mr Herity if people's lives were in danger because there wasn't a 2nd cath lab and no 24/7 care.

"Well the short answer to that is no, I don't.

What I would say is that the management of S.T Elevation programme that has been set for the whole of the Republic of Ireland sets a certain number of standards and these are the standards.

Number 1, that it should be provided on a 24/7 basis.

Number 2, the patients who are brought to the centre should be within a 90 minute travel time to be brought directly for primary p.c.i."
