Asylum seekers were "shipped like cattle" to Co Wexford from a hotel in Co Monaghan to accommodate a wedding, the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice and Equality has heard.
The Irish Times reports that one hundred asylum seekers living in state-funded emergency accommodation in Treacy's Hotel, Carrickmacross, were bussed to Co Wexford in late 2018 - an incident labelled as 'unacceptable' by the deputy secretary general of the Department of Justice, Oonagh Buckley.
The committee stated that Treacy's Hotel Carrickmacross was informed by the department that the hotel would no longer be used for emergency accommodation should such an incident repeat itself.
Fine Gael Senator, Martin Crowley added that the bussing of people for hours to facilitate a wedding was "an appalling way" to treat people.
There are currently 760 people living in state-funded emergency accommodation across the country.
