As part of an event organised by ESERO Ireland, Germany, and the Czech Republic, students in a number of Carlow schools were able to beam their questions over 400km into space to be answered by European Space Agency astronaut Matthias Maurer.

The event was part-hosted by IT Carlow, under the theme ‘Once Explorers, Always Explorers’.
Matthias told Rebecca Young of St Leo’s College that cutting down waste is crucial for space exploration
"Looking at how much energy you need to produce an object and how long you can use these objects and then later on also to look into the details on how to recycle and reuse."
"Imagine you want to travel to Mars, it's a trip of about 500 days, if you bring everything along your vehicle needs to be double powerful."
