Army Bomb Disposal Teams were tasked twice today to render safe explosive historical items in Dunhill, Co Waterford and Inistioge, Co Kilkenny.
Dunhill, Co Waterford
The Army Bomb Disposal Team were requested to Smoor, a rural location near the R681 outside Dunhill, Co Waterford, where a suspect device was found by a member of the public. The Army Bomb Disposal Team arrived on scene at 11 am and the device, which was found to be commercial dynamite left there for some time, was made safe at the scene by controlled explosion. The scene was declared safe at 11.40 pm.
Inistioge, Co Kilkennny
The Army Bomb Disposal were requested to tend to a suspect device found by a member of the public in the rural Tullogher area of Inistogue, Co Kilkenny. The team arrived on scene at 3.45 pm and the item, an early 19th Century Mills Type Grenade, was made safe by a controlled explosion.
People are kindly requested to report sitings of such items, from a safe distance and un-disturbed, to the Gardaí who may request Defence Forces assistance if required.
Commercial Explosives were commonly used for routine tasks such as path clearance before the advent of lift machinery. The Mills Type Grenade was commonly used during the War of Independence, Civil War and World Wars 1 & 2.
