Amsterdam planning to ban sale of weed to tourists on weekends

Amsterdam could be about to ban the sale of cannabis to tourists on weekends.

The suggested move is part of the city mayor's plan to ditch the Dutch capital's reputation as a "low-grade tourism option" with a renewed focus as "a place of culture."

Amsterdam residents have been getting increasingly vocal about the rowdy nature of their city in recent years, with plans afoot to enable locals to "take back their city."

Mayor Femke Halsema is currently overseeing plans to shut brothels, limit stag parties, and reduce the closing time of bars and nightclubs to 2 am.

As part of the proposed curbing of cannabis consumption in the capital, authorities are aiming to outlaw 'coffee shops' in certain districts and ban the sale of cannabis products to tourists on weekends.

The proposed laws are set to be heard at Amsterdam's City Council on December 21st.

Speaking to The Metro, Amsterdam's deputy mayor Sofyan Mbarki said: "Amsterdam is a metropolis and that means a lively and bustling city, but to keep our city livable, we now have to opt for limits instead of irresponsible growth."
