The European Commission has reached a provisional agreement that all new vehicles sold in Europe will be fitted with a speed limiter as a legal requirement from July 6, 2022
The speed limiters would come in the form of intelligent speed assistance (ISA) technology, which uses GPS tracking and cameras to monitor the speed of the vehicle and the local speed limits.
If a driver goes over that limit, an alarm could sound, the engine power may be automatically reduced or the accelerator pedal could be pushed back, depending on the model.
The move will reduce collisions by 30 percent according to the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC).
The European Commission has said the speed limiters, along with other measures included in the legislation, could prevent 140,000 serious road traffic injuries by 2038 and it hopes to cut road deaths to zero by 2050.
