Aldi to trial first-ever checkout-free supermarket

Long queues at the supermarket till could soon become a thing of the past.

Aldi is set to trial a checkout-free supermarket in London, meaning all you'll need is a smartphone and a dedicated Aldi app to beat the queues.

The German discount giant revealed to the Independent that shoppers will scan their app on entry to the store.

From here, in-store tech comes into play, tracking what items have been picked up by the shopper.

The customer can then walk straight out of the supermarket with the amount due billed via the app.

Giles Hurley, Aldi's UK and Ireland chief executive noted that the trial has the potential to "redefine" what it means to be a discount retailer.

"We are really excited to be testing this concept that will enable customers to pick from our range of quality products."
