Kilkenny school's song takes third place in GAA comp

The winning entries in a GAA competition for second level school students to compose a song to commemorate 1916 were announced at Croke Park this week.

The top prize went to students from Coláiste Bhríde, Carnew in Wicklow for their song "When the Last Gun's Fired".

Second place  went to St. Finian’s College, Mullingar for their entry “Shooting Stars for GAA”.

But third place was taken by Saoirse, Naoise & Ciara Carty from Our Lady of Lourdes Secondary School, Rosbercon, Co. Kilkenny for the song "Island".

The calibre of entries was so high a CD of the top 10 songs is being made will included in the publication of a book that lists the lyrics of all songs entered.

Also landing a coveted spot on the CD was Orla Gardner from Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny.

The full list of songs to be included on the CD are:

6) Ag Lorg Saoirse - Daltaí Bliain 4, Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, Co. Chiarraí
7) The Cherished Children of 1916 - Michaela Keenaghan, Banagher College, Banagher, Co. Offaly.
8) No title - composer Orla Gardner, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny
9) Éireann go Brách – Eimear Mag Aoidh, St. Mark’s Secondary School, Warrenpoint, Co. Down.
10) Rise Up - St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam, Co. Galway.
