21-year-old student kills step-grandmother for deadly truth or dare

A student in the UK who was fascinated by serial killers has been jailed for life for murdering his step-grandmother for a truth or dare.

The despicable act was carried out by 21-year-old Tiernan Darnton following a game of truth or dare between two other friends in 2018.

Initially, it was ruled that Darton's step-grandmother, 94-year-old Mary Gregory, had died due to an accidental fire caused by a discarded cigarette, however, the case was reopened when the then-student revealed the shocking truth during a counselling session.

According to The Metro, Preston Crown Court heard that Darton blocked a set of doors, cut phone lines and disabled a fire alarm before the room was set ablaze.

During the hearing, the courtroom heard of disturbing material on Darton's possession– including a kill list and details on stalking women.

However, Darton claimed in court that his actions were a way to stop Mrs Gregory dementia suffering.

Despite being rescued by the fire service, Mary Gregory died of her injuries in hospital four days later.

On passing sentence, the presiding judge said that Darton was "fascinated by serial killers" and that "murder had been on your mind for some time" – noting that the lady had died a "particularly cruel death."
