Student dies after eating leftover pasta

A 20-year-old student tragically died after eating pasta that had been made almost a week earlier.

The student, known as AJ, is reported to have eaten a portion of spaghetti that he had cooked five days earlier, but had been left out of the fridge for a couple of days.

He heated the food in the microwave and ate it but soon began to feel unwell, suffering from headaches, abdominal pain and nausea. Believing it was food poisoning, he went to bed, but was found dead by his parents eleven hours later when he didn't turn up to college.

The post mortem found that he died from food poisoning caused by bacillus cereus – a spore-forming bacteria that produces toxins and can lead to vomiting and diarrhoea.

The unusual case occurred in Belgium a number of years ago but has featured in the US Journal of Clinical Microbiology.

Dr Bernard is a licensed practitioner who reviewed this case for his Youtube channel. He said: ‘Many people eat pasta, or any other form of noodles, that are leftover for a day or two and they’re fine. But be careful of food left out for more than a few hours. If the food smells funny, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.’
