Sorry John Lewis, this €60 budget advert has won Christmas

The worldwide phenomenon of the Christmas advert has been evoking emotion and tears in homes all over the world for years now.

The charming, poignant, and festive shorts have made such an impact that there’s an annual countdown to the biggest hitters, such as UK retailers John Lewis and Mark and Spencers

But this year, a tear-jerking Youtube video that was made for just £50 (€60), is the Christmas flick everyone’s talking about.

Love is a Gift, a short film about a man counting down the days to Christmas so he can continue a yearly tradition, was originally made by filmmaker Phil Beastall in 2014.

But following the release of the big-budget adverts, such as The Boy and the Piano, starring Sir Elton John, Beastall decided to share his video online again.

The 2:27 minutes film begins with a man decorating his Christmas tree whilst counting down the days to December 25.

It then follows him to the big day and the moment he opens a present found in a cassette box.

“Merry Christmas Poppet,” the voice on the tape begins.

Speaking about the video, Beastall said: "People seem to like my film because it's the story that shines through.
