'Porn crisis' among children in Ireland, according to psychologist

Parents have a responsibility to "keep up" with technology when it comes to their child's online experience, according to a tech expert.

It comes as psychologist Dr David Coleman claims we are "in a crisis" when it comes to children accessing online pornography.

Figures from NGO Culture Reframed found a third of children will have seen pornography by the age of 12.

Pornography websites receive more visits each month than Netflix, Amazon and Twitter combined - according to the anti-porn awareness group.

Culture Reframed found boys who watch explicit videos from an early age are more likely to pressure their partners into engaging in degrading, painful or harmful sex.

Psychotherapist Richie Sadlier and Psychologist Dr David Coleman have been advising parents in recent days to start the conversation with their kids when it comes to online porn.

Technology correspondent Jess Kelly says parents need to know the basics of their child's online experience:

"If you are a parent giving a device to a child it's your responsibility to be across what they are doing and to be as in tune in technology."

"That doesn't mean you have to go and get a degree in tech, but just be aware of what apps your child is using."
