November 11th is "Singles' Day", an unofficial holiday to celebrate people who are not in romantic relationships.
"Singles' Day" originally comes from a Chinese holiday known as "Bachelor's Day", an unofficial counter holiday to "Valentine's Day". The date 11/11, was chosen because the numeral 1 resembles a bare stick. The four 1's are also said to abstractly refer to a group of single people.
Since 2009, the day has been widely celebrated commercially and is now the largest physical retail and online shopping day in the world. Asian retailer Alibaba usually hosts a festival on the night before the event, featuring performances from celebrities such as Taylor Swift and Nicole Kidman.
