Purpose of the Job |
Working as part of the operations team. The Fibre Optic Splicing Testing Technician & Cable Technicians must be able to:
- Deliver a quality installation service as specified by our clients
- Liaise with customers & clients in a professional, courteous and efficient manner
- Complete all paperwork in an accurate and timely manner and;
- Report back / update the office / Supervisor or Manager / as required.

The Fibre Optic Splicing Technician & Cabling Technician is a member of the Operations Department reporting to our Front-Line Manager. |
Key Result Areas |
Cabling Operative / Technician
- Undertake installation of underground & overhead cables as well as the installation of subducting.
- To take proper care and maintenance of company equipment.
- Be fully conversant with daily Construction Site Safety Practices
- Be conversant with manual handling activities
- Be able to carry out Traffic Management, Sign, Lighting and Guarding
- Be able to safely operate light lifting equipment
- Be able to read and understand Legends, Diagrams, and Schematic Designs
- Be able to safely operate fibre blowing machines
- Be able to safely use cable drum carriers
- Be able Rod and Rope Cable ducts
- To complete all documentation and paperwork in an accurate and timely fashion.
- Be technically proficient using different types of apps for recording of information.
- To liaise with all customers (both internal and external) in a professional courteous manner.
- To identify any potential problems with jobs and escalate to the Front-Line Manager.
- To fulfil Health & Safety responsibilities, adhering to the Company’s Health & Safety policies and processes that may be updated from time to time.
- To undertake such other duties as may be reasonably required by the Company.

Key Result Areas |
Fibre Optic Splicing & Testing Technician
- Be able to read and understand the meaning of Legends, Designs and fibre Schematic Diagram’s
- Cable handling techniques in relation to Micro and Macro Bending
- Understand Differing Splicing Methods and advantages / disadvantages of each
- Being able to carry out splicing to the required standard, using correct method i.e., clean, strip, clean, cleave, fuse, protect
Be able to:
- Identify Correct Cables
- Prepare enclosures
- Prepare cables into enclosures
- Identify Correct Joint
- Introduce additional cables into joint via correct port
- Identify whether fibres to be spliced are live or not
- Dress fibres in tray avoiding macro-bending
- Test at required wavelengths 1310, 1550 & 1625
- iOLM testing & OTDR testing
- Recognise problems associated with splicing and their problems i.e., treatment of defective splice results
- Be able to environmentally seal and anchor joint enclosures
- Be able to complete fibre management in all types of enclosure
- Correctly use Splice Management (tray system - organise and hold splices) (use of internal unit to organise trays) (clamping of tubing to trays) (locking cover to protect splices)
- Terminate Optical Fibre onto connectors
- Be technically proficient using different types of apps for recording of information.
- Be able to complete cable labelling, and labelling in general
- Complete documentation as to the requirements of company processes and client instructions

- Experience working on cabling network is desirable although full training will be given.
- Safe Pass accreditation is essential.
- Manual Handing is desirable (can be completed on acceptance of role)
- Sign, Lighting & Guarding is desirable
- First Aid is desirable
- CIF induction essential (can be completed on acceptance of role)
- Must be able to organise time to
· get resources needed to undertake work and;
· get to jobs by required time.
- Must be able to work at various locations through the country as required.
- Full clean drivers’ licence is essential.
- Experience in use of MS word & Excel is desirable.
