The Gilded Age is the new Downton Abbey! Or so Evoke claims.
The latest series is out on October 30th in Sky Atlantic. Based in New York in the 19th Century, it follows the lavish life of millionaire titans within the city. The series is written by Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey. It is set around how Industrial Revolution (also known as the Gilded Age) caused an explosion of middle-class wealth.
This results in a clash between the classes, with the wealthy families who have been wealthy for generations feeling threatened by the 'new money' families who are now threatening their hierarchy.
The second season introduces thirteen new characters, set in the world of the opera. The new season also sees the return of some old favourites. Season one follows the life of Marian Brook (played by Louisa Jacobson) as she moves from rural Pennsylvania to New York to live with her two aunts (Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixson) following the death of her father.
As Marian makes new friends in the city, she is torn between her old money family and her nouveau riche friends. The second season is set to widen the differences between the classes and characters.
