Irish play set in the Troubles receives nine Tony award nods

Irish based play, The Ferryman has received nine nods at the 2019 Tony Awards ceremony nominations.

The play, set during The Troubles, tells the story of the family of a former IRA activist, living in their farmhouse in rural County Armagh in 1981.

Now playing on Broadway, the play, written by Jez Butterworth, had its world premiere at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 2017 and continues to hold the title as the fastest-selling play in the theatre's history.

Nominees include Dublin native Fionnula Flanagan for her role as Aunt Maggie Far Away and Belfast’s Laura Donnelly, who plays Caitlin Carney.

The show also landed a mention in the Best Director, Best Actor and renowned Best Play categories.

Speaking to Broadwayworld.com, Flannagan said:

I'm just so bowled over right now. I'll probably just be in a daze all day. Already four calls have come in from overseas, so it just goes to show how many people were watching and care about this news!

Direction Sam Mendes added:
