The latest JNLR figures published today confirm that radio continues to thrive across the country with almost 3 million people tuning into Irish radio on a daily basis.
The JNLR results, which cover the period Jan-Dec 2016, show that 82% of Irish adults are tuning into Irish radio every day. The average listening time per listener is over 4 hours per day. Chairperson of the Choose Radio Group and Beat Boss Gabrielle Cummins said “Irish people have a unique relationship with radio and it plays a vital role in every community around Ireland. Today’s figures show that radio is consistently winning and retaining a majority share of the Irish audience each and every day.”
She added “the level of engagement and depth of loyalty that listeners have with their radio stations is not replicated in any other medium. With radio, time and again you will hear people talking about their favourite radio station and this is an opportunity for advertisers to capitalize on and utilize effectively.”
Meanwhile, Beat is continuing to play its part in the Irish radio story, with 149,000 adults now listening in each week.
The station’s Average Quarter Hour has increased year-on-year from 14,700 to 15,400. This means that during primetime (7am-7pm), the average number of people listening at any time has increased since this time last year.
Beat’s evening programming strand, The Takeover with Emma Nolan, continues to dominate evening listening across the South East. The show now has 49.3% market share of those aged under 35 – an increase from 46.8% this time last year.
Weekend listening has also increased at Beat, with Andy Mac’s Big Saturday now reaching a station-record programme high of 55,000 adults.
Head of Station Sound with Beat, Niall Power, is thrilled with the latest results. He says “radio has been facing increased competition from new media in recent years, but to see that 88% of all audio listening in Ireland is STILL with radio reminds us of the strong connection that Irish people – young and old – have with their radio station.”
“At Beat, we’ve seen record highs for shows like the Big Saturday and the Sunday Grill. The increase in our Average Quarter Hour suggests more people are spending time with us at any given time during the day and we’re over the moon that 94,000 adults choose Beat on a daily basis. We’re not just connecting with them on air – Beat now has almost three quarters of a million followers across social media, so people are choosing Beat across a range of platforms.”
