The organisers of Electric Picnic have confirmed that this year's festival, saying they have 'run out of time' on a decision.
It was hoped this year's edition may still be able to go ahead, with good news yesterday from the Government concerning numbers at outdoor events.
Outdoor venues will be able to operate at a 75% capacity for those vaccinated or recovered from Covid-19 in the last six months from September 6th, however Laois County Council have not changed their decision to grant a licence to the festival.
A spokesperson from the council said last week “There is no provision in law which enables Laois County Council to revisit that refusal or reconsider that application" after the licence was denied.
That's despite the Chief Medical Officer saying there would be no "major issue" on public health grounds for it to go ahead.
A statement from the festival says they have 'run out of time' in waiting for a decision on the council to change their decision.
"Regrettably, we have no other choice but to cancel this year’s edition" it says.
"We would not be able to do the festival justice this close to show day, and it would be unfair to ask ticket holders who’ve stood by us throughout this pandemic to come to EP and not get the full experience they are used to and deserve.
"We look forward to seeing you all in Stradbally next year, the 2022 edition will revert back to the original weekend on September 2nd-4th, 2022"
