DWTS producer calls for better funding for RTÉ

The producer of one of RTÉ's top shows says the broadcaster is in jeopardy unless the TV licence goes up.

Larry Bass says Dancing with the Stars might not be back on our screens unless the rate increases from €160.

Over half a million people tuned in for the current series, which finished on Sunday night.

Mairead Ronan was crowned as the winner of the third season of the hit show, becoming the first female champion.

But Larry Bass, who is the executive producer on DWTS, says many shows are at risk if RTE does not get more funding.

"I think the whole of RTÉ is in jeopardy, it's not just Dancing With The Stars," said Mr Bass.

"If RTÉ isn't correctly funded it can't run the schedules as it's been running.

"The license fee hasn't been increased for over 15 years and the license fee that is set is not being collected...

"It's been slowly, slowly, death by a thousand cuts."

Mr Bass added: "We have to ask ourselves do we want Irish TV?

"Do we want Irish people on our screens or are we all happy with looking at UK TV or Netflix or US TV?

"The whole country is lesser if we don't invest in our culture and proper rigorous public service debate."
