UK media watchdog Ofcom has received nearly 400 complaints following Friday night’s double bill of Coronation Street.
Soap fans were left stunned when the second episode of the ITV soap ended with not one but two gruesome murders.
A tense storyline that has seen Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre) keeping Andy Carver (Oliver Farnworth) prisoner ended with Andy’s death.
Phelan killed Andy after forcing him to first shoot fellow captive Vinny Ashford (Ian Kelsey) in a deserted mill, and Phelan was then seen dumping the bodies into a lake in the pouring rain.
Ofcom said it had received 390 complaints across the two episodes, which it is assessing.

An Ofcom spokesman said: “We will assess these complaints before deciding whether or not to investigate.”
Both Coronation Street episodes aired before the 9pm watershed, with the second one broadcast from 8.30pm-9pm.
Asked if the “soap gods will get justice” after Friday night’s storyline, McIntyre said: “It must be so and we have just woken them up out of their slumber – ‘Hey, this needs sorting out’.

“But while we run up to that, whenever that is, Pat Phelan is now a very dangerous person.
“Now he’s crossed the Rubicon, whereas before he would go to great lengths, for example the cellar, complicating things. The journey towards his comeuppance will be very lively, I’m sure, because now he has a direct route to solving problems.”
