Carlow actress Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in the movie Brooklyn.
The Oscars nominations were announced today in Hollywood. Saoirse has been nominated for Best Actress for her performance as Eilis in the movie. The film was based on a novel written by Wexford's Colm Toibin, and a large part of the movie was filmed in Enniscorthy. The movie also picked up Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay.
The 21-year-old will face tough competition in the Best Actress category against recent Golden Globe winner Brie Larson, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence and Charlotte Rampling. This is Saoirse’s second Oscar nomination – in 2008, at the age of 13, she was one of the youngest ever nominees for Best Supporting Actress for Atonement.
In a statement released this afternoon, Saoirse said "When we made Brooklyn, we had no idea of what was to come. It is the most personal film I have ever done, the hardest one too. I am honoured to represent this film with my friends - John, Nick, Finola, Yves, Colm, Amanda. This has all been a dream. To see how the film has been embraced has been heartwarming. Thank you so very much for The Academy - you are a group of people I respect greatly and to be recognized by you means so much. Thank you!"
The 88th Academy Awards, hosted by Chris Rock will be held at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre on 28 February.
