Waterford Airport runway extension gets the green light

Waterford Airport runway extension gets the green light

A major new runway extension for Waterford Airport has gotten the green light by An Bórd Planála this afternoon.

The extension, which will increase the runway length from 1,433 to 2,287 metres, could allow Aer Lingus and Ryanair to finally bring flights to the airport, now within the operating limit of both Airbus A320 and Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The runway is set to be extended by 491 metres at its northern end and 363 at its southern end.

The extension also makes the runway longer than the main asphalt in Cork Airport, which has previously seen direct Transatlantic routes by low-cost carrier Norwegian to the East Coast of the United States.

The decision wasn't expected until the 26th February, but the Waterford News and Star reports that Councillors were informed of the decision by Chief Executive Michael Walsh this afternoon.

The runway will be widened as part of the plans, and will include  the demolition of some properties on the existing site, as well as the building of new terminal buildings, car parks, landing lights and a number of other associated works.

Confirmation of funding for the project must now get the go-ahead by government, with the Department of Transport promising funding of €5 million in 2019 towards the works.

Beat has contacted Ryanair and Aer Lingus to enquire about their interest in using the airport for international direct flights in the future.
